Educational Programs

At the Elementary Level, Laurier Heights offers a choice of two programs, English and Early French Immersion. In Grades 7 to 9, we offer English, Early and Late French Immersion as well as Opportunities Program.

English Program (K to 9)

Alberta Education guidelines for curriculum are followed in this program, as in all other programs offered at Laurier. A very strong French as a second language program is offered to students in all grades except kindergarten.

Music Program (K to 9)

The music program offers choral music to all grades with recorder, percusion and hand bells introduced as students move towards Grade 6. In the junior high program, regular band and jazz band are the two main features of the music program. Students also have the opportunity to participate in groups to further develop their skills in a specific instrument.

Early French Immersion (K to 9)

Early French Immersion is a program of choice that begins in Kindergarten or Grade 1 and continues to Grade 12. French immersion students follow the same curriculum as students in the English program. They just study many of the subjects in French. In this program, French is the language of instruction for core subjects such as mathematics, science, language arts and social studies. French immersion students participated in the 17th Annual "Gal des arts oratories et dramatiques" on April 20th.

Late French Immersion (7 and 8)

Late French Immersion is an alternative program open to all students. The program begins in Grade 7 and continues to Grade 12. French immersion students follow the same curriculum as students in the regular program. They just study many of the subjects in French.

The goal of the late French immersion program is to help students complete the Alberta curriculum requirements, while developing an advanced level of proficiency in French by the end of Grade 12.

There is no requirement that a student know any French before starting the program.

Opportunity Program (7 to 9)

Students in this program are offered instruction at a more varied grade level in a classroom setting with fewer students. Complementary courses are offered with students in other programs as are some physical education classes. This program is only offered to students who qualify based on assessments made prior to entry. This year the Opportunity students spearheaded a Spirit Gear campaign.
